Green Therapy in the Mournes – 17 October 2025

Nineteen students and staff from Queen’s University Belfast joined Positive Steps Outdoors for a Healthy Hike ‘Green Therapy’ walk in the stunning Mourne Mountains, combining physical activity, mindfulness and connection with nature.

The day began at Gamekeepers Lodge, where the group geared up and received a safety briefing before travelling to Ott Car Park. Under the guidance of Coach Gillian, participants took part in a short body activation and mindfulness warm-up to help them connect with their bodies, each other and the natural environment.

The green therapy day beings with the gently sloping Ott track.

The group then followed the Ott Track towards the saddle between Slieve Loughshannagh and Carn Mountain, pausing along the way to take in the views over Foffany Dam and reflect through guided mindfulness moments. From there, they crossed the Mourne Wall and made their way towards the distinctive peak of Doan, enjoying the challenge of a short scramble to the summit. The reward — sweeping views over Silent ValleyBen Crom and the surrounding peaks — made the effort worthwhile.

After a relaxed lunch below Doan, the group descended to Lough Shannagh and followed the Banns Road back beneath the slopes of Slieve Muck, just as the clouds lifted and the sun broke through.

This Healthy Hike was more than just a walk — it was an opportunity to pause, breathe and reconnect with each other and the environment, being the aim of Green Therapy. It reminded everyone how time outdoors can lift spirits, strengthen connections and support both physical and mental wellbeing.
