A Refreshing Escape: Mindfulness and Nature on Our Gortin Glen Hike

In early Oct 24, we had the pleasure of guiding nine fantastic participants, all key health workers from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and College of Paramedics, through the tranquil forest trails of Gortin Glen and Mullaghcarn Mountain. It was a crisp, cold morning as we gathered in the car park, the kind of chill that wakes you up and sharpens your senses. As we introduced ourselves and shared the plan for the day, the excitement and camaraderie were already building, setting the tone for the hike ahead.

Setting Off: Nature Trails and Mindfulness in Motion

We started by following the Nature Trail, winding through peaceful woodland, with the sound of rivers flowing alongside us and birds singing in the trees. As we climbed higher, the cold air gave way to warmer rays of sunshine, and we paused to engage in a mindfulness exercise. Here, we practiced grounding techniques, tuning into the sounds, smells, and textures of the forest around us. It was the perfect way to centre ourselves before continuing upwards, and just as we were finishing, two deer appeared on the path ahead—a magical reminder of nature’s beauty.

Climbing Mullaghcarn: Warmed by the Sun and Stunning Views

The climb up Mullaghcarn Mountain was a rewarding challenge. As the path steepened, the sun came out in full, allowing everyone to shed a layer or two. With conversation and laughter flowing, we made our way to the summit, where we were greeted by breath-taking panoramic views across the Sperrins. At 542 metres, the view from Mullaghcarn’s summit, alongside the statue of the giant, was well worth the effort. Here, we took a well-earned break for lunch, sipping coffee and soaking in the stunning surroundings.

Traversing the Bog and Descending by the River

After lunch, we continued across the boggy moorland, taking care as we crossed Mullagharn South top. The sense of remoteness and the wide-open views across the landscape were awe-inspiring. Soon, we re-entered the forest, and the familiar, calming sounds of rivers and birdsong returned. As we descended via the Pollen Path, following the river with its picturesque waterfalls and wooden bridges, we reflected on the mindfulness practices we had engaged in throughout the hike.

A Day of Laughter, Connection, and Mental Well-being

By the time we returned to the car park, there was a shared sense of accomplishment and relaxation. The day had been filled with laughter, conversation, and moments of quiet mindfulness that allowed everyone to reconnect with themselves and the world around them. For this group of health workers, who spend their days supporting others in often stressful situations, the hike was a much-needed mental health boost. Here’s what some of them had to say about the experience:

Really enjoyed the input and conversation from the guides and counsellors. They were a lovely bunch of people.”

“Very enjoyable and interesting. I learnt a lot about local history of the forest, trees and wildlife.”

“Great experience and would highly recommend to others.”

“The whole day was a worthwhile and an enjoyable experience, it was nice to focus some time on me for once. We work in healthcare and it comes so naturally to all of us to care for others yet we are all pretty poor at caring for ourselves. This was well needed, thank you.”

“A fantastic, well organised, fun and relaxing day. The mindfulness exercises were brilliant and the nature related information from Brendan and Alan was both interesting and informative. The whole day was filled with fun and camaraderie. I really hope this can be provided on an annual or bi-annual basis for staff to benefit from.”

It was a reminder of the power of nature, movement, and mindfulness in promoting well-being. We look forward to welcoming more of you on future hikes to experience the same rejuvenating benefits.
